Decode. Read. Succeed!
WIKI Origin: Phonics is a targeted literacy intervention designed specifically for secondary school students. Created to address and close the literacy gap, our programme equips students with the foundational skills they need to become confident and fluent readers.
Why is Phonics Important for Secondary Students?
Many secondary students struggle with literacy due to gaps in their foundational phonics knowledge. Without a solid understanding of how sounds and letters work together, they can find it difficult to read fluently, comprehend texts, and access the wider curriculum. WIKI Origin: Phonics provides a structured, systematic, and age-appropriate approach to learning phonics, helping older learners master the code of the English language.
Our Impact
By re-engaging students with phonics in a new and relevant way, WIKI Origin: Phonics helps to transform their relationship with reading. The programme not only improves literacy skills but also boosts confidence and self-esteem, empowering students to succeed academically and beyond.
How it Works
Our programme uses a diagnostic assessment to pinpoint specific gaps in a student’s knowledge, creating a personalised learning journey. WIKI Origin: Phonics moves beyond traditional primary-level materials, using engaging, age-appropriate content and a deconstructive approach that respects the maturity of secondary students. It builds on what they already know and helps them to:
-
Decode unfamiliar words with confidence
-
Read with improved fluency and speed
-
Succeed by unlocking access to all areas of the curriculum
Our programme is flexible and can be adapted to fit your school's schedule. For the best results, we recommend delivering sessions:
-
Frequency: At least once a week, but ideally three times a week.
-
Duration: In focused bursts of 15-30 minutes.
-
Group Size: Ideally 1:1, but in groups of no more than three students to ensure a high level of individualised attention.
FAQ
-
What age of students is WIKI Origin suitable for?
WIKI Origin: Phonics is specifically designed for secondary school students.
While phonics is typically taught in primary school, many older students have gaps in their foundational knowledge. Our programme is carefully crafted to be age-appropriate and respectful of their maturity. We avoid the use of materials or approaches that may feel juvenile to this age group. Instead, we use a deconstructive, systematic approach that builds on their existing knowledge to fill gaps and accelerate their progress. -
What students is WIKI Origin suitable for?
WIKI Origin: Phonics is suitable for a wide range of secondary students who are not yet reading at age-related expectations. The programme is particularly effective for students who:
☑ Have gaps in their phonics knowledge: They may struggle to sound out unfamiliar words.
☑ Have a history of unsuccessful interventions: The programme's unique, age-appropriate approach can re-engage students who have previously struggled with literacy programmes.
☑ Are new to the English language: While not a dedicated EAL programme, WIKI Origin can provide a crucial foundation for students learning to read and spell in English. -

How can we track student progress with WIKI Origin?
To help you measure the impact of WIKI Origin, we provide a free diagnostic test. It is specifically designed to pinpoint precise gaps in a student's phonics knowledge. The test will directly inform and guide the creation of a bespoke, targeted learning programme for each student. The test can be re-administered as required to monitor progress and adjust the bespoke program dynamically. Using it as a final assessment provides quantifiable evidence that phonics gaps have been successfully closed.
Additionally, we recommend using your existing reading assessments, such as NGRT tests, to monitor improvements in literacy skills over time. By combining these tools, you can gain a clear picture of how WIKI Origin is helping your students develop their reading.

Do staff need training to deliver WIKI Origin?
While WIKI Origin is designed to be easy to implement, we offer training and guidance to help teachers get the most out of the programme.
☑ In-person Training Day: For optimal implementation, we recommend that staff delivering the programme attend the in-person training day.
☑ Train-the-Trainer Option: If you're implementing the programme with a large number of staff, a smaller group can attend the in-person training, and then train other staff members within your school using CPD sessions.Every PowerPoint presentation includes notes at the bottom of the slides. These notes provide the necessary instructions, making it simple to deliver the content accurately and confidently. These notes are further complemented by complete, step-by-step instructions available on our website.
With this support, your staff will be well-equipped to deliver WIKI Origin effectively and help students achieve their literacy goals. -
Can WIKI Origin be used alongside other literacy programmes?
WIKI Origin is designed as a standalone programme. It provides the essential foundational knowledge that prepares students to successfully move on to more advanced literacy initiatives, such as WIKI Build.
We strongly advise against running WIKI Origin concurrently with other phonics packages. Doing so risks potential confusion and conflict due to differing methodologies, which could impede student progress.
